Evidence-based guidance on performance in use

Targeting good design and value for money, the Home Office set up a Design Review Panel to guide police forces proposing new buildings. ZZA provided expertise on the panel. The work involved successive engaging with local police forces proposing to procure new police buildings, and their design consultants, in design reviews, and making recommendations for enhancement.

Evaluation

Post occupancy evaluation

The Home Office Design Panel viewed The North Kent Basic Command Unit building, procured by Kent Police, as an exemplar. To establish its functional effectiveness as an operational building, the Home Office commissioned ZZA to conduct a POE. ZZA focused on the BCU as a workplace in use, capturing the experience a cross-section of staff – including senior management and facilities staff, and people working in the building’s office, custody and support space. The published report was shared with the Police Property Managers Federation.
